 Four rare sparrow hawks were recovered in an early morning raid near Burntwood on Tuesday, 28 July.The protected birds were found in cages at an isolated house off Walsall Road, near Muckley Corner. Officers from the National Wildlife Crime Unit, supported by neighbourhood police officers from Trent Valley, swooped on the property shortly after 8am. The young birds were removed from the premises and are now being cared for by the RSPCA before being released back into the wild sometime in the future. Andy McWilliam, investigative support officer for the national wildlife unit, explained that sparrow hawks were protected under the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside act. “Unfortunately, this kind of offence is far too common and we carry out similar operations throughout the country. “We hope this latest raid sends out a very strong message to anyone considering taking or harming protected birds that specialist officers will investigate and bring offenders before the courts.” He urged anyone with information about wildlife crime to contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. People giving information may be able to claim a reward for the arrest and conviction of offenders.
